Three decades of rated chess in England

English competitive chess spent twenty years shrinking. The rated-player pool fell from around 16,170 in 1994 to a low of roughly 11,600 in 2010, recovered gently through the 2010s — and then everything changed. The chart carries two breaks in how the list itself is defined, marked rather than smoothed: the new rating system in 2020 widened who appears on the list, and in June 2022 the ECF purged ratings left inactive since before the pandemic.

The like-for-like comparisons are therefore the eras between the breaks. Under the old grading system the pool grew from 11,826 (2014) to 20,197 (January 2020). Under the current system it has grown from 24,422 (June 2022) to 44,269 (August 2026) — 81% in four years, and roughly 119% above the pre-pandemic pool even on a cautious reading across the definitions.

The boom, measured four ways

Since the June 2022 purge the list's definition has been constant, which makes the recent series unusually clean. Four things are true at once: the pool is growing fast, the growth is newcomers rather than returners, the median rating is falling as they arrive, and the female share is finally rising after decades stuck below one in ten.

The falling median is the boom's signature, not a decline: thousands of new, mostly young players enter at the bottom of the scale faster than the middle moves up. The same influx shows in the ECF's own membership demographics — juniors were 18% of members in 2016 and about 37% by 2023.

ECF membership: collapse, then records

Membership of the English Chess Federation tells the same story in members rather than ratings. Covid cut it by a quarter; the rebound overshot everything that came before, and it has set a record every year since. Paying membership — the like-for-like series, since free junior and supporter categories have grown — reached 16,593 in April 2026, its highest ever.

What Britain typed into Google

Search interest tells the story the rating lists cannot: what the general public did, not just competitive players. Google's index (100 = the peak month) shows the pattern everyone expects — a lockdown bump, then The Queen's Gambit — and then the part nobody quotes: the peak came in November 2024, around the Gukesh–Ding world title match, well above the Netflix moment (66 at its height). British chess searches over the last twelve months have run about 115% above their 2015–2019 average.

County by county

Every rated player's club belongs to a county association, which lets the national story be read locally. The bars are players on the current list; each county links to its own page with the full series back to 1994.

The fastest growth since June 2022, of counties with at least 100 players then — Shropshire +243%, Bristol & District +161%, Northumberland +144%, Gloucestershire +119%, Cleveland +114%.

The Kent angle

Kent is our county, so it gets the close-up. 1,402 players listed a Kent club in August 2026 — two and a half times the 2019 figure, growth ahead of England's from that baseline (153% against 123%) and matching the national pace since 2022. The single biggest engine is junior chess: 181 rated players now come through the county's junior organisation alone, and our own club has grown to 41 rated players.

The questions journalists ask

How many people play chess in the UK?

Nobody measures casual play reliably. The widely quoted "12% of UK adults — about six million people — play chess" comes from a YouGov survey conducted in April 2012, and its definition counted anyone who had played in the previous year. What can be measured today: 44,269 players held an English Chess Federation over-the-board rating in August 2026, ECF membership passed 20,000 for the first time in 2025, and the ECF cited around 4.5 million UK-registered Chess.com accounts in 2023.

Is chess growing in the UK?

Yes, and it is measurable. Players holding an ECF over-the-board rating rose from 24,422 in June 2022 to 44,269 in August 2026 — 81% growth in four years under a constant definition. ECF paying membership set a record of 16,593 in April 2026, and the 2026 British Chess Championships drew the largest entry in the event's 122-year history.

How many chess clubs are there in England?

1,566 clubs fielded at least one rated player in August 2026, per the ECF rating lists. That excludes purely casual and online-only clubs, so the true number is higher; the ECF's Club Finder is the live directory.

How many chess players are there in Kent?

1,402 players listed a Kent club as of August 2026 — two and a half times the July 2019 figure of 554, growth slightly ahead of England's over the same period.

Context worth having beside those answers: Netflix released The Queen's Gambit on 23 October 2020 (eBay UK reported chess-set sales up 215% within weeks); Chess.com grew from 100 million member accounts in December 2022 to 250 million in early 2026; the UK government put roughly £1 million into English chess in 2023 and a further £750,000 over three years from 2026; and BBC Two aired the first terrestrial chess series in a generation in March 2025.

Methodology

• What the main series counts. Players holding an ECF over-the-board rating (standard, rapid or blitz) on each published rating list. A rating lapses after 36 months without a rated game, so each point approximates “people who played rated chess in the previous three years”. Online-only ratings are excluded throughout.
• List cadence. Annual lists 1994–2011, six-monthly 2012 – January 2020, monthly from July 2020 — all fetched from the ECF rating API.
• The two breaks. July 2020: the new rating system replaced the old grading list and widened who appears (marked on every chart that crosses it). June 2022: the ECF purged ratings inactive since before the pandemic. Growth figures quoted on this page never straddle a break unless explicitly labelled.
• County figures. A player counts toward a county when their club belongs to its association. The archive stores each player's latest club, not their club at the time, so county series are exact today and increasingly approximate further back. Placeholder and congress entries are excluded from club counts.
• Scale change. Ratings before August 2020 are old-style ECF grades (0–300), after are four-digit Elo-like ratings. No chart on this page mixes the scales.
• Membership figures are hand-compiled from ECF council papers, each point traceable to a named document below. “Paying members” is the comparable series.
• Search interest is Google Trends' index for the Chess topic(not the bare keyword) in the United Kingdom: 100 is the month with peak interest since 2004 and every other month is relative to it. It measures attention, not player counts, and Google recalculates the index each time the range is sampled, so small differences from a fresh export are normal.
